India Solar News & Market Trends

Jakson Solar is proud to share the latest India Solar News and insights, which are driving our country at a faster pace towards clean energy independence.

The solar industry in India is going through a massive surge in solar installation in every sector. Be it a Ground Mounted Solar Project or a Rooftop Commercial ProjectEducational Institutions, Government Buildings, Cricket Stadiums, Independent HomesHousing Societies, Car Parks and even Floating Solar Projects are now a common sight everywhere in India.

With over 125 GW of solar installed and bold plans to achieve 500 GW of renewables by 2030, today, India stands as the world’s third-largest solar installation base.

PM Surya Ghar 2.0 May Bring Battery Storage and Shared Rooftop Solar

The government is reportedly considering a major upgrade to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with plans for a possible second phase that could include battery storage, shared rooftop solar systems, and more performance-linked support for households. The move comes as rooftop solar adoption under the scheme continues to grow across the country.

According to recent reports, the proposed PM Surya Ghar 2.0 may shift the focus from only upfront subsidies to a model that also rewards electricity generation, system efficiency, and long-term performance. Officials are said to be reviewing options such as battery-backed solar installations, community solar models, and utility-linked aggregation to make rooftop solar more practical for urban homes and apartment residents.

Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar scheme currently aims to support rooftop solar installation in one crore households and offers subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for residential users. The initiative has already crossed several major milestones, with millions of rooftop solar systems installed nationwide.

If the second phase is approved, it could mark a significant shift in India’s rooftop solar policy by combining clean energy generation with storage, shared access, and stronger long-term efficiency goals. For households, this could mean lower electricity bills, better energy backup, and a more flexible solar adoption model.

MNRE’s June 2026 ALMM mandate pushes up India’s solar cell production

  • India’s solar cell manufacturing capacity is witnessing a major boost ahead of the June 2026 ALMM (Approved List of Models and Manufacturers) mandate, which requires many solar projects to use domestically approved solar PV cells. The policy is driving fresh investments and expansion by Indian manufacturers to reduce dependence on imported cells.
  • Industry experts note that while the ALMM mandate is strengthening domestic manufacturing and energy security, concerns remain around near-term supply availability, project execution timelines, and higher procurement costs as developers transition to locally produced solar cells.

India adds 2.7 GW rooftop solar capacity in Q1 2026, residential segment drives 82% growth: Report

  • India added 2.7 GW of rooftop solar capacity in Q1 2026, recording a 125% year-on-year growth, driven primarily by strong residential demand under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, which accounted for 82% of total rooftop solar installations during the quarter.
  • Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat emerged as the top-performing states for rooftop solar adoption, while India’s cumulative rooftop solar capacity reached 23.5 GW by March 2026. Industry experts noted that future growth will depend on faster approvals, financing access, DISCOM coordination, and grid readiness.

Over 40L Households Now Benefit From Rooftop Solar Systems Under Surya Ghar Yojana

  • More than 40 lakh households across India have installed rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, significantly expanding access to clean energy and helping families reduce their electricity bills.
  • The scheme has seen strong participation due to streamlined application processes, financial assistance, and subsidies, supporting the government’s goal of promoting rooftop solar adoption while advancing India’s renewable energy and energy security objectives.

India adds over 14GW of solar in Q1 2026

  • India added approximately 14.2 GW of solar capacity in Q1 2026, marking a nearly 95% increase over the previous quarter, driven mainly by utility-scale projects and strong growth in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
  • Solar now accounts for about 55% of India’s total renewable energy capacity, with the country reaching over 150 GW of installed solar capacity. Analysts expect continued growth, supported by large project pipelines, government tenders, and rising residential solar adoption.

Solar Didis to Install Solar Panels Now

  • The Uttar Pradesh government is expanding its renewable energy outreach by training and deploying “Solar Didis”, women from self-help groups who will help install rooftop solar panels and promote solar adoption in rural areas under clean energy initiatives.
  • The program aims to generate employment opportunities for women while accelerating rooftop solar penetration, supporting India’s renewable energy goals and increasing awareness about solar power benefits in villages.
